India's Literacy Rate, Educational Qualifications and the
10 questions
What is India's literacy rate, and why is it relevant to YASHHO?
India's literacy rate has improved considerably.
The government's Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2023–24 estimated literacy at 80.9% among people aged seven and above. The PLFS 2025 estimate was 81.1%, according to the Ministry of Education.

These figures show progress in foundational education. YASHHO's proposition is that literacy should be complemented by the development of abilities relevant to learning, work and life.
Does being literate mean a person is fully prepared for success?
No. Literacy is foundational, but it does not automatically establish professional competence, financial security or effective decision-making. A person may be able to read and write yet still need development in Critical & Analytical Thinking, Problem-solving, Communication, Planning and Execution.
YASHHO examines these additional dimensions through its AACE64 framework.
What is the difference between literacy, education, skills and success abilities?
Literacy provides foundational capabilities such as reading, writing and numeracy.
Education develops knowledge and understanding. Skills involve learned competencies for particular activities.
YASHHO's Essential Success Abilities framework examines broader capabilities such as Concentration, Resilience, Logical Reasoning, Articulation, Accountability and Decision-making.
These dimensions overlap and reinforce one another; they are not mutually exclusive.
Why can a highly educated person still struggle to find employment?
Qualifications may not align with available jobs, employer requirements or labour-market conditions.
The ILO–Institute for Human Development's India Employment Report 2024 documented substantial unemployment among educated young people, including a 29.1% unemployment rate for young graduates in 2022 under the report's definitions. This is a historical, age-specific figure, not the current unemployment rate for all graduates.

YASHHO addresses ability development as one part of this wider employment challenge.
What is the difference between India's literacy rate and its employability rate?
Literacy rates estimate foundational educational capability in a population.
Employability is a broader concept involving the competencies and circumstances relevant to obtaining and performing work.
There is no single universally applicable national employability rate directly comparable with the official literacy rate.
YASHHO's framework examines selected abilities relevant to employability, but it is not itself a national employability survey.
Why do literacy and unemployment statistics sometimes appear contradictory?
Literacy and employment statistics measure different outcomes.
A country can improve literacy while still experiencing unemployment, underemployment or shortages of suitable jobs.
For example, India's PLFS 2023–24 reported a 10.2% unemployment rate among people aged 15–29, using the usual-status measure.
Directorate of Government Examinations+1 Understanding educational progress therefore requires looking beyond literacy alone.
Can YASHHO help address India's graduate employability challenge?
YASHHO examines abilities relevant to professional readiness, including Confidence, Problem-solving, Adaptability, Efficiency, Decision-making, Structure and Active Listening.
Identifying developmental gaps may help individuals prepare more effectively for workplace expectations.
However, improving employability nationally also requires quality education, job creation, industry opportunities and economic development.
Why does India need financial literacy alongside basic literacy?
Financial literacy helps individuals understand budgeting, borrowing, savings, financial risks and responsible spending.
India's Ministry of Education explicitly recognizes financial and digital literacy within its broader approach to functional literacy.

YASHHO can connect financial-literacy activities with Comprehension, Logical Reasoning, Planning, Self Regulation and Decision-making.
Can YASHHO contribute to improving the quality of education in India?
YASHHO's framework can complement education by providing structured information about selected success abilities.
Schools may use appropriate individual and cohort-level findings to identify developmental priorities.
Any claim that YASHHO improves educational quality at scale would require systematic implementation and independent outcome evaluation.
Why should India focus on human capability development as well as educational expansion?
Expanding educational access is essential. But access alone does not guarantee learning quality, employment or wellbeing.
Human capability development also involves opportunities to apply knowledge, communicate, solve problems and participate effectively in society.
YASHHO's mission is to contribute to this broader development through its 64-ability framework.
